For the city of Esbjerg (Denmark), we are developing an innovative, cutting-edge lighting project. Once a heavily fossil-fuel–dependent harbor town, Esbjerg has undergone a radical transformation in recent years, establishing itself as a “Wind- City” and a major hub for offshore wind farms in Europe.
This identity is now being made tangible in the urban landscape. Together with the companies Icewind from Iceland and ewo from Northern Italy, we are developing PAPILIO 2.0: wind-powered streetlights with integrated rotors, serving as a landmark for the new district „International Kvarter“ in Esbjerg. The translucent rotor blades, produced in collaboration with sustainability pioneers Aluula from Canada, cast beautiful patterns of light and shadow on the ground, turning renewable energy generation into an aesthetic experience— both during day and night.
An intelligent, insect-sensitive lighting system using innovative Connexx technology completes the concept.
The project is currently shown in the exhibition “Design Connects - What Design Can Do” in the “Neues Museum” in Nurberg.
