The exhibition “Erinnerung ist…” at the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism makes remembrance of Nazi injustice tangible on a sensory and personal level. Everyday objects linked to individual fates and historical experiences complement the permanent exhibition from May 8, 2025 to May 10, 2026. The 22 selected objects function not only as historical artefacts, but also as points of departure for memories and stories: each piece is accompanied by personal audio commentaries recorded by contemporary witnesses, descendants, artists, activists, and scholars.

The exhibition architecture translates this approach into spatial form. The vertical display cases made of warm, raw wood create a striking contrast to the cooler atmosphere of the permanent exhibition, which is characterized by steel and light boxes. Despite their strong presence, the vitrines remain simple and unobtrusive, integrating seamlessly into the overall dramaturgy of the exhibition. The floor-to-ceiling steles also serve as a guiding system: the numbered display cases are visible from a distance, allowing visitors to navigate clearly from one object narrative to the next.

The delicate historical exhibits are conservationally protected through humidity-stabilizing granules in airtight vitrines and lighting carefully adapted to their individual requirements.

In this way, a “multivoiced, sensually accessible work of remembrance” emerges—one that expands the documentary character of the permanent exhibition through immediacy and human perspective: through biographies, gaps in memory, and the ongoing transmission of history.
